COVID-19 and Domestic Violence
During these unprecedented time cases of domestic violence are becoming more numerous due to being confined with an abuser. Especially in the month of March2020 the contact volume decreased dramatically due to shelter in place orders. The pandemic was proving to be dangerous for victims.
As lockdowns began to phase out, our call volume began to increase somewhat. At SAFE we were prepared to see an onslaught of victims reporting incidences of abuse, and seeking supportive services.
Certainly the impression Covid made in our lives was impactful, but consider many abusers used the pandemic as a tool to further power and control. Sadly, many local shelters were not available because of Covid.
The courts have had to change the way they see cases. Cases were continued, and jail populations were reduced. During the height of the pandemic, the court was hearing protective orders through phone calls.
This has made an impact on our community, however SAFE has remained open during the pandemic. We have been here to assist a survivor, and remain open to staff cases. We are still offering support virtually, but are personally staffing cases such as protective orders and criminal cases.
